Now raising money for a good cause

denver kids webWe’ve started to ask friends and family for donations towards our fundraising goal, and are up to $2,001 as of Nov. 20.

Every dollar that’s donated through the “Donate” button on the right side of this page is going to Big City Mountaineers, so BCM can provide opportunities to urban teens.  If you’d like to help, we’d love a $31 donation — that’s one cent per mile we’re biking in March and April of 2010. If you can give $5, we appreciate that too. Just click the “Donate” button on the right and you’ll be directed to a secure site where you can donate by credit card. If you’d like to write a check, please make it out to “Big City Mountaineers” and mail it to:

Here’s what BCM was able to accomplish in 2009:

  • 37 weeklong wilderness trips in California, Colorado, the Boundary Waters and the Pacific Northwest, pairing 5 teens with 5 adult mentors.
  • A total of 2,675 program days — one program day = one teen in the outdoors for one day
  • More than 2,000 nights spent sleeping under the stars
  • Approximately 5,000 miles hiked
  • Approximately 4,000 miles paddled and portaged
  • Improvements in three core teen developmental categories: Commitment to Learning, Positive Values, and Positive Identity

Here’s what our 2009 BCM volunteers and teens had to say:

“It’s impossible to summarize the BCM trip in a single quote. How can you capture on paper the symphonic sound of 9 people laughing? Words cannot describe the joy of accomplishment in the teens’ eyes when they discover strength they didn’t realize they had. The BCM trip is not something you can just read and understand; you simply must experience it yourself.”

“It was great going on a trip for a week. It means so much to me I can’t express it in words.”
-2009 BCM teen

“Everyone I’ve met seems so passionate and interested in what BCM does, and it’s certainly a testament to the success all of you have achieved in the past and continue to do with each trip.”
-2009 BCM volunteer

“Thank you for the opportunity to get out of the city and into the world of ‘Woman vs. Wild.'”
